Where the Words Flow
By Kate Evangelista
When I first decided I wanted writing as a career, all I needed was my laptop. Most often than not, I wrote at my desk in my bedroom. I was happy to plug away, watching the words fill the page, feeling my fingertips on the keys.
Almost a decade into the writing game, I found myself needing variety. First of all, I no longer write first drafts on my laptop. I’ve realized that the longer I’m in this the heavier the pressure becomes. So I needed an escape. I needed to find my creativity again. Plus, I needed somewhere away from the internet. Being on my laptop presented a ton of procrastination opportunities.
Recently, I returned to teaching. Part-time. In the mornings, for about two hours, I teach creative writing to Grade 11 students. There were moments when I would be sitting at my desk while my students wrote out whatever seatwork I had given them for the day. I was looking at a lot of wasted time just sitting. So, armed with a notebook, while my students, wrote I fed on that creative energy like a vampire and used it for my next book.
That was when I discovered a renewed creativity. Writing my first draft by hand allowed me to let go of the pressure and the expectations. I became comfortable with my creativity again.
It’s the summer and I’m writing my next draft, which is why I take the time to drive to my favorite Starbucks. It had been newly renovated. I order my favorite white chocolate latte on ice with a pump of mint syrup and grab a table and start writing in my new notebook. A notebook that I embellished with washi tape and stuck an affirmation that says “Art and Soul” to. Everyone is on vacation, but I don’t feel envious. The inspiration is flowing and I am one happy writer.
I guess the lesson of this post is, as long as I have a beautiful notebook and a great pen in my hand, I can write anywhere. Add to that my favorite drink and the right chair to tabletop ratio and I’m in writer’s heaven.
